Tennessee paycheck taxes in 2026

Tennessee doesn't tax wages, so your paycheck only has federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare withheld.

  • Tennessee has never taxed wages.
  • The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed in 2021, so Tennessee now has no personal income tax.

Because there is no state income tax, workers in Tennessee usually take home more than workers with the same salary in states like California or New York.

Tennessee’s sales tax and the end of the Hall tax

Tennessee has never taxed wages, and employers have no state income tax to withhold. Its one personal income tax, the Hall tax, only ever applied to interest and dividends. It was phased down from 4% to 1% and then fully repealed for tax years starting January 1, 2021, so you shouldn't file a return for any year since.

What you pay instead shows up at the register. The state sales tax is 7%, and every local area adds its own rate. Groceries get a lower state rate, but candy, prepared food, alcohol and dietary supplements don't. If you're moving here for the paycheck, it's worth budgeting for the sales tax too.

  • The general state sales tax is 7%, and food and food ingredients are taxed at 4%.
  • All local areas add a local sales tax of up to 2.75%, so the top combined rate on most goods is 9.75%.
  • There is no Tennessee return to file for wages, and no state withholding on your pay stub.
