What’s new on the 2026 W-4
- Bigger child amount: Step 3 now uses $2,200 for each child under 17 (and $500 for other dependents).
- New deductions in Step 4(b): qualified tips (up to $25,000), overtime pay (up to $12,500, or $25,000 for couples), interest on a loan for a new car (up to $10,000) and $6,000 for each person 65 or older, each within income limits.
- Higher SALT cap: state and local taxes up to $40,400 count toward itemized deductions.
- Cash gifts to charity: up to $1,000 ($2,000 for couples) count even if you take the standard deduction.
If you get tips or overtime, or you’re 65 or older, a new W-4 can raise your take-home pay now instead of waiting for a refund. Choose “Work it out” in Step 4(b) above to see how much.
How to fill out a W-4 form, step by step
- Step 1, personal information: your name, address, Social Security number and filing status. Everyone fills this in.
- Step 2, multiple jobs: only if you have more than one job, or you’re married filing jointly and your spouse works. With two jobs in total, tick 2(c) on both W-4s.
- Step 3, dependents: $2,200 for each child under 17 and $500 for each other dependent, if your income is $200,000 or less ($400,000 if married filing jointly).
- Step 4(a), other income: interest, dividends or retirement income you want tax withheld on. Not self-employment income.
- Step 4(b), deductions: deductions beyond the standard deduction, from the Deductions Worksheet. Leave blank to use the standard deduction.
- Step 4(c), extra withholding: any extra tax to take from each paycheck.
- Step 5, sign: the form isn’t valid until you sign and date it.

Freelancing on the side? The 1099 tax calculator shows how much extra to withhold or set aside. A client asking for your tax details needs a W-9 instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is a W-4 form?
Form W-4, the Employee’s Withholding Certificate, tells your employer how much federal income tax to take out of each paycheck. You fill it in when you start a job, and again whenever your situation changes.
What’s new on the 2026 W-4?
The 2026 form raises the child amount in Step 3 to $2,200 per child and adds the new deductions for qualified tips, overtime pay, car-loan interest and people 65 or older to the Step 4(b) Deductions Worksheet. The standard deduction used in the worksheet is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.
Do I have to fill out every step?
No. Everyone completes Step 1 and signs Step 5. Steps 2 to 4 are only for people with more than one job, a working spouse, dependents, other income or deductions. A single person with one job and no dependents can skip straight to Step 5.
Who do I give my W-4 to?
Give page 1 to your employer’s payroll or HR team. Don’t send it to the IRS. Keep the worksheet pages for your own records.
How do I get a bigger refund or a bigger paycheck?
To have more tax withheld (a bigger refund, smaller paychecks), enter an extra amount per pay period in Step 4(c). To have less withheld (bigger paychecks), claim your dependents in Step 3 and any deductions above the standard deduction in Step 4(b).
Can I claim exempt on my W-4?
Only if you owed no federal income tax last year and expect to owe none in 2026. Then you complete Steps 1(a), 1(b) and 5 and check the exempt box. An exemption lasts one year, so you need a new W-4 by mid-February of the next year.
How often can I change my W-4?
As often as you like. Give your employer a new W-4 whenever you marry or divorce, have a child, start a second job, or your income or deductions change. Most employers apply it within a pay period or two.
